Made in England this is a quite rare, tall, vintage Royal Doulton pitcher or jug with a moulded coral shaped handle from the Australian Fish series titled 'The Old Wife'. Pattern number D5966, introduced in 1938 (withdrawn 1955). Beautifully hand-painted with a low relief design of The Old Wife (fish species native to Australian waters) swimming amongst coral and marine plants. Special makers mark to base and stamped D5966. Inspired by the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. Would also make a wonderful vase or decorative piece. In great condition. There are no chips, but there is some crazing which does not detract at all (very hard to see without looking for it in the right light and up close. More visible to base (shown in final photo). Height 29cm approximately.
